No xorg. Instead I seem to have this:

    prompt > COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l '*xfree*'
    ii  xfree86-common      4.3.0.dfsg.1-14

Oh, good idea.

I switched to console, ran "/etc/init.d/gdm stop", disconnected 
ethernet etc and then closed the lid. On openning it again, it
hung just like before.

So, I think this is not X related. Its also not cpufreq related.

Any others ideas? Anyone?
