Device "/dev/dsp" does not exist



hello
i have sarge installed on my titanium powerbook (1 ghz processor) and i cannot get rhythmbox to play audio streams.
i get the following message
Device "/dev/dsp" does not exist

running lsmod gives the following:

i'm also having sound automatically started in the system sound preferences, but this doesn't seem to make a difference.

what do i need to do to get sound running on this machine?
