No sound: Deb Sarge on G4 iMac

Have just started with Debian--Sarge on a G4 iMac.

Though I've been using Linux several years, have never dealt w sound config issues. However, based on all resources I have to read and a lot of googling, I'm pretty sure I have all the tools in place for sound--alsa & company.

cat /etc/modules.conf

### update-modules: start processing /etc/modutils/alsa-base
above snd-pcm snd-pcm-oss
above snd-mixer snd-mixer-oss
above snd-seq snd-seq-oss
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
post-install snd-ad1816a /usr/lib/alsa/modprobe-post-install snd-ad1816a
post-install snd-ad1848 /usr/lib/alsa/modprobe-post-install snd-ad1848
post-install snd-ali5451 /usr/lib/alsa/modprobe-post-install snd-ali5451
post-install snd-als100 /usr/lib/alsa/modprobe-post-install snd-als100
post-install snd-als4000 /usr/lib/alsa/modprobe-post-install snd-als4000
 etc. . . etc. . .

But I must have a config prob somewhere, because I have zero sound in the system. Start a music CD & I can tell from the player that it is being played--but nada on sound. I can't even ring the system bell.

As far as I can tell, my sound card is ID'd as "Apple Tumbler" and that it emulates alsa--though frankly, I can't find my way back to that hardware ID. I don't see an obvious sound card ID at lspci:

harvey@doob:/etc/modutils$ lspci
0000:00:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth/Pangea AGP
0000:00:10.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 440 Go] (rev a3)
0001:01:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth/Pangea PCI
0001:01:17.0 ff00: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo/Pangea Mac I/O
0001:01:18.0 USB Controller: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo/Pangea USB
0001:01:19.0 USB Controller: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo/Pangea USB
0002:02:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth/Pangea Internal PCI
0002:02:0e.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth/Pangea FireWire 0002:02:0f.0 ffff: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth/Pangea GMAC (Sun GEM) (rev ff)
harvey@doob:/etc/modutils$

I'm really floundering here. I don't doubt the problem is at the most basic config level. I'd appreciate it if someone can point me to where I start in diagnosing the problem.
Many thanks. --Harvey
