Pursuing this further - I rebooted the install system using BootX and figured out how to get to a shell (just didn't put a CD in the drive) but the instructions said that the hard disk file systems were mounted on "/target", but when I got to the shell, there was no such entry in the directory, and "mount" was not one of the commands included.
