Well, the 744x chips are easy to tell from the 745x, because the former
have a smaller packages than the latter. The L3 cache interface takes
of the order of 100 pins you know....

A real geek would write this 74[45]7:-) Now is there a way to determine
this by attempting to read (or modify) l3cr?
