smbfs 1970 date problem

I'm running Woody (Stable) with security updates on a PowerMac. I am mounting some Windows shares via smbfs. I have a problem that smb mounts show files with dates of 01 Jan 1970. This is very bad as I use make to sync files before doing remote compiles, etc. The dates on both mahcines are correct to within 1 second.

$ ls -l /mnt/win2k/foo
-rwxrwx---    1 me     me         4407 Jan  1  1970 foo

$ ls -l /mnt/win2k/*
-rwxrwx---    1 me     me         4407 Jan  1  1970 foo
-rwxrwx---    1 me     me         4407 Jan  1  1970 bar

Linux 2.4.19-powerpc-smp
Samba 2.2.3a-12
smbfs 2.2.3a-12

Please help. It is critical that I can sync files between a win2k host and a Linux host.
Please CC to my email address too.

Thanks,
Brendan Simon.
