ok please forgive me, i am partially an idiot. my glx problem appears
to be mostly that xlibmesa-gl1-dri-trunk was not installed, some other
mesa library was. at least now glxinfo and glxgears behave as
expected.

tuxracer acts a bit wierd -- it look like the screenshot at
http://www.gelato.unsw.edu.au/~ianw/ibook-glx/tux.png with weird lines
over most objects, and eventually (after say a minute) crashes with

drmCommandWrite: -22
drmRadeonCmdBuffer: -22 (exiting)

then you'll go back in, it looks ok but is dog slow like it's not
using any hardware rendering at all. only way i can get it "acclerated"
again is to restart X. weird.

i also still have the sleeping problem. drm-trunk-module is
2003.05.04, xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk is 2003.05.04-1,
xlibmesa-gl1-dri-trunk is now 2003.05.04-1 and kernel is 2.4.20-ben10
