esd is using a buffer to store a certain amount of sound data. (Note that with esd you can play sounds over the network, see esdcat/esdmon, so a buffer is quite a good idea :-) 

The buffer (or cache) has a fixed size, therefore the delay depends on the sound format/quality of the sample you're playing, e.g. 22.5KHz/8Bit plays longer then 44.2KHz/16Bit.
