I get random lockups every few days on my 2.4.3 SMP ia32 box, too.
It's funny that you mention it has something to do with sleeping,
because while you surely meant putting the computer to sleep, my
computer only hangs when *I'm* sleeping!  It never hangs when I'm
awake.  Usually every few days, I'll wake up in the morning to find it
locked hard.  Truly bizarre, I know :)
