i believe you need to quote that, but not checking the source i may be
wrong.  try:

	append="video=platinumfb:vmode:12,cmode:16"

see above, its of course possible that quik's append system is broken,
but i somewhat doubt it.  easy way to check:

cat /proc/cmdline
