The PPC parts of Linux are not especially screwed, at least not more than
the other archs ones I guess. Well, if you are talking about the "official"
Linus tree, then yes, it's not fully in sync yet, but that's on the way.
You should really use the PPC kernel from either the main PPC tree on
hq.fsmlabs.com bitkeeper or paulus rsync tree.

If you got the kernel to lockup, it would be interesting to figure out what
happened. Did it manage to display a panic message ?
If you enable xmon, do you get some output from it ?
