why? 2.2.17 has all the major powerpc merges in place, you only need
to really use an rsync tree if you need the USB backport, or have
really new hardware.

on my Blue G3:

[eb@socrates eb]$ uname -a
Linux socrates 2.2.17 #1 Mon Sep 4 20:35:42 AKDT 2000 ppc unknown
[eb@socrates eb]$ uptime
  5:32pm up 3 days, 20:32, 7 users, load average: 1.00, 1.00, 1.00
[eb@socrates eb]$

this is with a clean unpatched kernel sources from kernel.org.
