I'll save this message and check tonight.  As an aside, mount is going
to come up when I get home, and netstd just got installed - that's
right, we have some kind of networking now.  I still have to fix more
and getty though.

I didn't include it in my NMU because of Ian's comment about it on the
BTS, but the dpkg --root problem is easily fixed.  I'll ask on devel
about it if I get a moment.
