And? I rarely use real GNOME apps. Many others who just use GNOME as a
desktop do too. And I often see people falling into this trap.. And I
am using and won't continue to use a non-UTF8 locale.

And I am *not* talking about gnome-vfs. I am talking about OOos native
ftp and webdav support. And did you even try it? It does *not* work. Try
opening such a URL. (i.e. ftp://ftp.stardiv.de)

or they use the normal dialogs.

As we see it doesn't work; and then we have to think about KDE, too
(there's only one setting for both).

I don't see the problem in enabling the Native File Picker if you want;
especially since that is upstream behaviour, too.
