vmlinux.ecoff is - as the name implies :-) - an ECOFF image, while
vmlinux is an ELF image. Older SGI firmware versions cannot boot ELF
files, so one has to use the ECOFF version there. AFAIK, the Cobalt
firmware can only boot ELF images.
