I'm pretty sure in your case we have a) a public SCM and b) you've
written proper commit logs. For a sponsored package chances are good
that the maintainer will change AND neither a) nor b) are given, so if I
would be a sponsor I'd want to have clean patches with a  short
description, this makes it much more easy to port them to new upstream
versions or drop them, if they're not needed anymore. It just makes less
headaches on the long run. If you've ever tried to understand a long
patch to a package from our ubuntu friends, and there's also no useful
information in their SCM, you know what I'm talking about.
