Modifying an *automake* generated makefile and "easier to understand" do not
belong in the same sentence.  

Fixing the Makefile.am file and rerunning automake (preferably the latest
one to get rid of bugs) is much easier on the brain.  That doesn't mean you
have to run it on the build, you can run it before uploading (but you better
have automated methods that guarantee you won't forget to).
