In this case it might be a good idea to become a member of the Debian
Med Alioth project.  This would enable you to directly commit your
changes which finally will simplify your work on the Ubuntu packages.

Feel free to ask here if something remains unclear with those tips.
Perhaps we might be able to enhance the document if it leaves some
open questions.
