It depends. I personally prefer official upstream releases. On the
other hand sometimes upstream has unusual release habits or it might
make sense to start packaging with unofficial releases in experimental
to prepare the next official release.

Coincidentally, a couple of days ago I asked the vtk maintainer
whether he would be interested in group maintenance of VTK. However,
I suggested pkg-scicomp rather than debian-med as VTK isn't
particularly "medical".

Debian Med is not only a packaging team. It picks applications
that are relevant for medical care out of the Debian pool. There
is no conflict at all if a package is maintained somewhere else than
in the Debian Med packaging repository because maintainers are free to
keep their stuff whereever they want and there is no need at all to
force somebody to use Debian Med packaging repository.

BTW, this explains why using watch files from SVN are not working
perfectly in all cases.

Kind regards

     Andreas.
