Re: [odin-devel] [LONG] Broken (lib)vista copyright

This is great. (I'm in contact with Helmut Hayd of your
institute and we agreed that it might be very interesting
to package some of your software at MPI for Debian - I
don't know exactly whether it is actually your system.)

Specifically, we have developed two packages:
1. a package called 'lipsia' which we have developed
for the analysis of functional magnetic resonance data,
and 2. a package called 'via' for 3D image analysis.
'lipsia' is linked to 'via', and both 'via' and 'lipsia' use the
'vista' data format. We have reduced the 'vista'-library to
its essentials and have added a new data type called
'volumes' for 3D image analysis. The vista-code
is a very small fraction of the entire code.
Over the years, we have made some additions
and changes to 'vista' independent of what Gert did.

Because I would regard lipsia and via very valuable additions
for Debian-Med we will have to deal with your version of
vista.

I do not want to risk any problems with 'lipsia' or 'via'
since both packages are currently used by many researchers
in our institute.

Understand.

Our software has been in use for many years (since 1999)
and is very well tested. It was used and cited in far more than
100 international publications so that maintaining its integrity
is a primary concern.
In order to avoid having to test 'lipsia' and 'via' all over again,
I think that changes to our code should be avoided if at all possible.

What do you mean with "avoided if at all possible"? Do you think
that patches that enhance functionality without risking to break
any existing functionality would be possible.

I would be glad if Od1n would also work with our version of
the vista-library.

This would be the optimal situation.

Perhaps the best way to proceed is to check that out first?

Any volunteers? I guess for some test you might give some
URL to your vista version.

I really would love to finish the fork nightmare and find a
clean and easy usable solution.

As a general remark: All these forks seem to be a subset of
the original today unmaintained vista. I'm a little bit
concerned about the naming. We should find a different name
and vistaio was an atempt to do so. We might think about a
completely new name. I'm a little bit concerned about a
completely differnet product that shares the same name (even
if libvista is much older - we might avoid some missunderstandings).

Kind regards

          Andreas.
