Automated updates of Bioinformatics databases

Hello,

I recall dicussions on this list on how to best update databases and perform 
respective tasks that need to be triggered afterwards, i.e. indexing, restart 
of web services, whatever.

A recent publiction in Bioinformatics features this development here
http://dunbrack.fccc.edu/BioDownloader/
which one gets only access to after passing some form to enter personal 
data .... sounds non-distributable for us :o/  Nevertheless, it also means 
that we are not overly much exotic in thinking about respective solutions.
