Well, I don't know the people involved, but I think the general
description of the problem is "how to do not-for-profit-work and still
make a living".

One pointer may be APC, and their infos on managing NGOs:

If you need more info, I can dig up some contacts in Austria who deal with
funding and management of non-profit organizations.
