Yesterday's debian-live-etch-i386-gnome-desktop.iso hangs on NEC Versa P8100 laptop.

can I see a lspci from that machine?

nope; busybox is from within initrd. means..
although your machine correctly supports booting from cdrom, the linux
kernel is not able to detect the cdrom.

either this is from your host systems partitions, or, the squashfs image
is corrupted. to figure out which one it is, can you please boot it
again (into busybox) and then see, if you can 'eject /dev/sd0'?

failsafe does not have any influence here, as this only disables machine
specific stuff (like mce, apm and acpi where some crappy bioses making
linux freeze, but this isn't the case here, so failsafe is of no help
anyway).
