My point was that this never came up and I was led to believe that it
was legal rather than simply allowed.  As an example NexT was "attacked"
for making proprietary enhancements to GCC.  The modified version had 
to be GPLed and released to keep it all legal.  However the same NeXt
shipped GCC linked against it's proprietary LibC and _that_ wasn't 
mentioned as a problem.

I read somewhere that it was initially a Motif/X port/Fork of Emacs.
This allegedly happened long before the Hungry programers made LessTiff
( worst OSS name if ya ask me.  but it works :)
