Hi,

I have built a 2.6.20.3 kernel (using kernel.org source) for a recent
laptop (HP Compaq nx6320 with T7200 Core 2 Duo), and found the option
under:

 Processor Type & Features
   -> Processor Family
      -> Core 2 / newer Xeon


I can't help with the rest of your problems though.
