Re: Etch freezes after dist-upgrade

Hi,

as mentioned I experienced some problems before. At one point I got
pissed and reinstalled etch from scratch using debootstrap. But XFCE4
freezed my mashine again even after a fresh install. I was, and am,
running 18-4-k7 kernel. Maybe something went wrong with the whole
18-4-k7/dbus/hal combination. I am using Fluxbox, no automounting and so
further, for the past 2 weeks and had no problems.
Not really sure, but it is also possible that my config files in my home
folder somehow got messed up after the data corruption problem I had.
This is the only part of the system that got untouched after the fresh
install.
Off topic. I am really starting to like Fluxbox. Very fast and very easy
configurable. You can tweak it easily to look really nice. I am in the
process of buying a new laptop, there is now a big probability that Flux
box is going to be my weapon of choice there as well. Because complexity
that Gnome/KDE have, unfortunately it seems XFCE as well now, just
brings problems.

Kemal

As far as I'm concerned it has to do with the kernel 2.6.18-4-686
update. I was using kernel 2.6.18-3-686 without any problems and as
soon as I did a dist-upgrade which upgraded me to 4 I experienced all
the same problems as described by other users.

This is also the second time this has happened on two different
machines. For whatever reason the upgrade to kernel 2.6.18-4-686
causes major problems and I'm literally not going to upgrade the
kernel again and stick with 18-3.

Hi!
I found an old (about 15 days) backup on my hard-disk and was able to
avoid further problems by switching to the old system, then again after

...which is a quite long list indeed...

I think I shall try some of these in the next days and follow the
try-and-test philosophy. Until now I haven't been able to get logs
on what goes wrong.

Surely enough neither kernel 2.6.18-4-686 nor ipw3945 was the problem.

Anyone else experiencing problems so far?

Cheers

Giacomo
