i have a C1320 and had the same problem ;-)

i think you used knoppix >= 4.0 (has kernel something like kernel 2.6.11...)

thats not the problem. debian 3.1 has kernel 2.4.27 or 2.6.8 (i think).
in your notebook is a ich6 (same as in my nb.), which needs ahci
(intel's advanced host controller interface). ahci is available starting
at 2.4.29-preX and 2.6.9-rcX. (see e.g.
http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html "AHCI mode")

my way was: start with knoppix >= 4.0 or grml >= 0.4 (these 2 worked
fine...) and try a netinstall or use debootstrap (didn't work without
problems, had to patch some scripts... :-(), then build and install
another kernel with ahci (i use 2.6.13.1)...

btw.: ahci has a very small bug: the hdd-led (or lcd?) lights permanently.
i found a bugfix, but didn't bookmark :-( (google for e.g. ahci linux
led hdd), bugfix was to remove 2 lines of code only!
