When this happens, can you press Ctrl+Alt+F1/F2/etc and switch to
another terminal?

Can you press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and restart X?

The whole system is unresponsive, doesn't respond to any keyboard commands.

Have you checked /var/log/XFree86.log.0? (might be several)

I will check it next time it happens.

From where did you install the nVidia drivers?

Got binaries from nvidia.com

When did the problem start happening?

Honestly I don't know.

Have you tried backing up your X config and using either
dpkg-reconfigure or apt-get --reinstall on X?

Trying it now without installing nvidia drivers. I cannot replicate this problem as it is intermittent.

Have you considered upgrading to a newer kernel?

Hasn't crossed my mind.
