For Synaptics touch-pad:
Take a look at the xfree86-driver-synaptics package in Sarge/Sid.

For USB:
You don't give very much information for this.
- - Are correct modules loaded?
- - Noticed you don't have usbdevfs in /etc/fstab.
- - Do you have/need libusb and usbutils installed?
- - Any relevant messages in logfiles?

What release are you running: Woody/Sarge/Sid?

Cheers,
