I doubt if they are related issues. I have an R50 myself, but one of
the guys in the office has an R40 running Debian which he installed from
a "Mepis" CD, and I have installed Debian from the Sarge beta onto
another R40 for a client.
I haven't tried a standard Debian kernel on these however - the client
installation was mainly to get the IPW2100 going (it worked) but was a
hand-built 2.6.5 (well, a hand-built package, using make-kpkg :-) In
that instance I used the ACPI and had suspend/resume working fine.
If you have problems with modules and kernel 2.6 you should also make
sure you have hotplug and module-init-tools installed.
If you're seeing a system hang when you Ctrl+Alt+F1 (and so forth)
confirm that it is a hang, rather than a "console 1 didn't display" by
switching back to console 7 and seeing if you can still move the mouse
(after waiting a few seconds).
If the kernel doesn't have framebuffer in it I have seen cases where
this sort of thing happened, especially with ATI cards.
Cheers,
Andrew.
