make-kpkg (apt-get install kernel-package libncurses5-dev) can make this
all pretty easy. Working over the configuration to get it "nice" can
take a little effort the first couple of times, but once you have a
config that works you can keep using it. I'm sure someone on this list
can provide a good starting configuration for whatever laptop you are
working with.

The big advantage of make-kpkg, of course, is that it builds a Debian
package, so you can install / uninstall / etc and it handles Grub / Lilo
things, etc, etc.
