I'm currently running kernel-image-2.6.5-1-686 on an IBM ThinkPad R32.
Both S3 and S4 work with some issues (USB not working after resume,
ethernet doesn't resume properly).

It seems to work "out of the box". The only thing I've done is enabling
ACPI in /boot/grub/menu.lst:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.5-1-686 root=/dev/hda2 ro acpi=on
	acpi_irq_balance vga=791
