You mean you deleted the Linux partitions before creating the "one large DOS
partition", right? It's possible that the Windows fdisk left the Master Boot
Record of the drive in a state that's fooling sid while it's trying to
recognize the drive and the partitions on it.
It'd be best wiping the MBR clean. Booting from the sid CD, or from a Knoppix
one, issue this command:
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda count=1
and retry the install. Beware, *this will wipe clean all current partitions.*
