What is the command line in your /boot/grub/menu.lst?

If you don't want to use cramfs then you want something like this (what
I am using right now):

title=Two Six Zero
root (hd0,3)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.0-kant26 ro root=/dev/hda6
