The specifics depend on the machine and the BIOS.
I was doing some resaerch on why keys on my thinkpad seemed to 'stick'
and found that was blamed on APM interrupt calls. Switching to ACPI
would fix that but break other things, such as my ability to use 'Fn'
keys, and my kernel (2.4.20) would have to be recompiled with ACPI
patches. I tried starting acpi on my box but I just got an error
message.
If APM works on your machine, you may want to stick with it.
