font rendering on gnome2.2 woody

kernel 2.4.17 custom.
i am using the new gnome2.2 backport for woody. i have very large fonts on
some apps including gv and cannot find a way to make them look better. a
screenshot might help.

can someone help? is it something in my home dir? i had tried fiddling
with fonts in some .gtkrc and other places where i thought fonts were
being defined, but no use.

i solved a similar problem for mozilla by setting up a
$MOZILLA_CONF_DIR/chrome/userChrome.css. but any way i can do it for all
apps at once? so that all menu fonts are like not more than X pt?

thanks

praveen
