'nullmailer' I use for outgoing mail. Its a braindead smtp queue which polls
remote servers until it finds one that accepts a connection at which point it
empties its spool. This is especially useful if you are in many different
environments (laptop users do) and so the servers you use are different.
This works seemlessly and if I go somewhere new I just add the local smtp
server to the polling list and it sorts its self out. :)
This in combination with 'whereami' makes for a *very* automagic system.
As for inbound traffic I use IMAP and if theres something which looks good (I
use 'mutt' as my client) I just save it to a local maildir mail box. Its as
effective as I need, however of course your mileage may vary :)
However I cannot recommend enough nullmailer, its really saved me a lot of
hassle (everything works with it, as for as the mail clients know they are
talking to 'sendmail') :)

uucp is ment to be the best way to shift data on not always on connections.
However of course you need servers which actually support this which is a
problem is you are not the local sysadmin :)
