I cannot guarantee this will work, but... try a framebuffer kernel.

I had to deal with a machine which correctly behaved only when the
also-mentioned "chvt 1" trick worked.  (You change to a text console,
then when you waken, the hardware videomode restore behaves correctly.)
Actually, I whipped up a script to feed apm that would wait on the resume 
and chvt 7 again, so it felt like with a pause, we came back.

But when that system (ASUS family) was given a framebuffer kernel the
hack was no longer needed.

I have a 560E myself but it's not a debian box, so I can't test the 
answer.
