dell offer a broader range of higher end devices and services in their i8k range than most other laptop manufacturers offer in a laptop. it is only for this reason that they may appear more difficult to configure. things like 32 and 64mb graphics cards, dual monitor out, irda, dual cdr/rw's, and kb cd player etc result in a slightly more laborious install [if you want to use them]. once on there, debian on an i8k is oh so nice...
