It may be worth looking at one of the packages like whereami, divine,
intuitively, etc.  These packages attempt to figure out where your
laptop is (with some configuration, of course), and set up your network
accordingly.  I personally use whereami.  The woody/sid package is
probably easier to configure than the one in potato, and I think that
you should be able to use it without any problems on potato.

After you install whereami, etc., you can make them run in
/etc/pcmcia/network.  (AFAIK, whereami adds a line automatically when it
gets installed.)
