ah, didn't think to check this, but:
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y

fortunately it was a default, cause i'm sure i would have overlooked it.

it's all fun (at least i try to remind myself of that frequently).

the forementioned video problem has not appeared for the past three
days, so i'm not sure what was going on.
