Visual artifacts with XFree86 4.0.2-7 on a Sony VAIO PCG-735

Hi, debian-laptop folks,

I posted this question on the debian-x list a few days ago and got no replies.
I'll try a different crowd here:

I recently upgraded my Sony VAIO PCG-735 laptop to unstable (sid), including
XFree86 4.0.2-7. This laptop uses the Neomagic MagicGraph NM2160 chipset
with an 800x600 HPA LCD display.

Everything went smoothly except that I'm getting funny little visual artifacts.
A picture is worth a thousand words here; see

The extraneous dots around message 2736 are the artifacts I'm referring to.
This image came from an unaltered xv "Grab", which may be a clue. They tend
to go away with a forced redraw (control-L). I've noticed the problem most
often in xterms with the default font; they happen much less often when a
non-default font is selected. I have also noticed them from time to time in
other applications (for instance, konqueror).

This didn't happen with XFree86 3.3.6. I haven't noticed it on my desktop
machine, which is running XFree86 4.0.2-7 with an ATI Xpert 98 card.
Has anyone else noticed this effect? Is it a known problem? Should I file
a bug report? What other information would be useful to include in a bug
report (my XF86Config-4 file?)?

Thanks very much for your help,
