by chance, have you tried the NeoMagic driver? i installed
xserver-neomagic_1.1.0-1-1.deb and then followed the steps in the doc
files to get this driver working. it turned out to be one of the easiest
x configurations i've done :) 

although i'm working with a dell latitude lm 166, which has a maximum
resolution of 800x600, in reading the XF86Config file that came with the
deb package, it would seem possible that your machine should be
supported at 1024x768 (at least your Thinkpad model is listed as
supported).
