Há duas definições que acho relevantes:
Especificamente pra CD/DVD:
To write on the fly means to write directly from source data to CD
data without first writing a disc image Same as Write Direct.
Optimum Power Calibration Area (OPC Area) A special area near the
center of the recordable disc. Before writing a track on a disc,
the CD recorder must adjust the amount of power applied to the writing
laser to an optimum level for each individual disc. The optimum
calibration area is reserved for this purpose.
Em geral para a informática:
In relation to computer technology, on the fly describes activities
that develop or occur dynamically rather than as the result of
something that is statically predefined.
Não sei se conseguimos "traduzir/localizar" este termo passando
o mesmo sentido. Traduzir como "em pleno vôo" pode ser algo próximo do
que queremos, usar "dinamicamente" ou "em tempo de execução" não é
exatamente o que "on-the-fly" faz.
A idéia de "on-the-fly" é pular uma etapa, fazer algo num passo
só... por isso o "durante o vôo", mas isso não vai ficar compreensível:
Gravação de CDs de dados "em pleno vôo"
Gravação de CDs de dados "voando"
Gravação de CDs de dados "durante o vôo"
Gravação de CDs de dados "diretamente" ("on-the-fly")
