i moved the chroot to its own partition and managed to boot it with lilo
so now i can test things without waiting for the compressed image -
which is good news in itself
the sortlist i've got now has about 5K lines instead of 120K before,
making mkisofs's thinking at the start roughly 20 times faster. i guess
it does a linear search :)
