[debian-knoppix] Cloop OS on CF card?

I am interested in experimenting with using a cloop compressed stripped down
Knoppix on a CF as an embedded operating system. Has anyone done this
already? Something along the lines of when you copy the image into RAM but
instead it would be running off of a CF card. So that way my embedded OS
would be much larger than the CF it is on when not compressed.

Any help or direction to look would be appreciated.

No idea. You can ask the maintainers.

Avoid experiments on a production system. ;-)

edit /etc/apt/sources.conf

There are some Debian servers down due to a hack.
set a # before that one. I think the same with non-US.
They also realeased a new version of woody. Check their site.

I really appreciate all of your hard work, and even more appreciate your
kindness and helpfulness to someone so new to all of this.

There is probably an easy solution, and I have tried to research it but
everything suggested I cannot find anything that works.

I cannot seem to mount my cd-rom or floppy, let alone my zup (external)

All I can seem to find is along the lines of :

mount cd-rom
or
mount /dev/cd

none of it works, I get a message that it wasn't found in fstab.

I looked at man mount, and the above was all I could seem to find related to
mounting cd-roms.

I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction,
obviously there is something that I need to do before mounting it, but I
can't seem to find any more detailed information.

Thanks!

Catherine

Well, try:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom

try this: dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/
libxcursor-dev_1.0.2-2_i386.deb

it wil install the package and than run apt again.

Actually, the way Knoppix interacts with the package system is a little =
more
broken than just the KDE issues. I just ordered a CD of the 11-19-2003
release (mine is apparently a beta 3.3 from September) just to get the =
new
KDE and OpenOffice. But the version I currently have is seriously flawed
when you try to use "dselect". Once you start "dselect", you end up =
removing
dozens of packages. This is a real show-stopper for me -- I depend on
"dselect" with "woody", where it works flawlessly. Is this fixed in
11-19-2003??

Regarding the hacks on the Debian site: I knew something was wrong when =
I
couldn't get to the security update sites over the weekend. I assumed it =
was
"just" a DoS attack at the time. As of yesterday, I still couldn't get =
to
"packages.debian.org", although most everything else seems to be up if =
you
don't mind an occasional page coming up in Swedish instead of US =
English. So
... Our worthy competitor Bill Gates has offered a rather substantial =
cash
bounty for information against the virus creators that wreaked such =
havoc on
his user community over the summer. How many millions of Debian and =
other
GNU/Linux/FreeBSD users are there? What if each of us donated $1US to a
bounty fund to be used against the thugs who mount DoS attacks and crack
free software sites?

Avoid experiments on a production system? But what if your product is
research? <ducking>

On Knoppix, you can just access CD-Rom or floppy data at /mnt/floppy/ or
/mnt/cdrom/ , /mnt/cdrom1/ , /mnt/cdrom2/ ... No manual mounts necessary.

Otherwise, and also on other GNU/Linux derivates, you can mount any
media at any location. Look into /etc/fstab for the default
mountpoints.

Nothing is fixed, since nothing is broken. Really. You should read the
Debian documentation about how theit update system works.

Please update KDE from the unstable branch, unless you want to downgrade
to the "stable" version 2.2 or fully remove KDE. dselect is not a
sufficient tool for this. Or, at your wish, set the default to
"unstable" in /etc/apt/sources.list if you want to automatically get all
packages from unstable, instead of just upgrading from testing. Or,
upgrade individual packages manually. There are so many solutions to
your problem.

Yes, there are currently problems on the Debian archives due to an
attempted break-in on the Debian servers. Please read
the Debian news about this. It has nothing to do with Knoppix.

Knoppix is not a product.

On another forum where someone else had the same problem, he was given
the following command to see just what is at /dev/cdrom:

$ ls -l /dev/cdrom

$ lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            9 Nov 26 16:51 /dev/cdrom ->
/dev/scd0

I tried as an experiment to mount both /dev/cdrom and /dev/scd0
I got nowhere, as you can see below:

root@Catrin:/home/jasmine# mount /dev/scd0
mount: can't find /dev/scd0 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

root@Catrin:/home/jasmine# mount /dev/cdrom
mount: No medium found

Any thoughts? I HAVE to be missing something...

Thanks!
