[debian-knoppix] Howcome 700MiB images fail but 682MiB images succeed?

Hello,

I tried burning the Knoppix 2003-01-20 image, but it failed. Other
attempts with other Knoppix images also made coasters (none have
worked). (I verified the MD5 sums on these images, I have also
successfully burnt some of those other images on another CD burner.) I
have an HP CD-Writer 7500 plus. When I try to access the burnt CD with
any CD-ROM drive, the drive will spin a long time and then Linux will
report "No medium".

The 2003-01-20 image is 699MiB according to "ls -lh", and 698MiB
according to Cdrecord's "Track 01: data" output. This is the image that
fails.

I changed 2003-01-20 to make a 682MiB (according to "ls -lh") image.
This worked perfectly.

Why does my burner fail with the 699MiB image and work with the 682MiB
image? What can I do to make 699MiB and 700MiB images work?

Thanks,
