Well, it's just a matter of opinion, but some like me believe it's better to 
be a little slow, than to treat non-i386 users as second hand citizens.
Debian's goal is to be available on (nearly) all platforms for (nearly) every 
porpuse.

I don't call dropping architectures as being efficent, but if what you are 
suggesting actualy happned, then Debian would have been just another SuSE or 
another RedHat. Fact is, Debian isn't just another RedHat, it's a diffrent 
distro with it's own audience.
