Try booting with floppy!
On the floppy you can change a:syslinux.cfg with whatever
you want, like:
DEFAULT vmlinuz
APPEND lang=us ramdisk_size=100000 init=/etc/init noapic
apm=power-off vga=791 initrd=miniroot.gz floppyconfig
screen=1280x1024 depth=24 desktop=xfce quiet BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix
TIMEOUT 300 ...
Notice floppyconfig! It executes a script knoppix.sh on
disk! There you can assign your keyboard with:
xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap

I have always been using english! Mainly because I am
grateful to Linus he has not developed in his native
language. I would have problems then ;-)

Please leave leave out whatever you want, but not the X-Server!

I agree! But tomsrtbt is not bad ether! It is "most Linux on
a floppy". But the 1722 floppy breakes very often. If you
don't have floppy, you cannot use knoppix. Maybe per etherboot?
