Hi, Sorry about the private reply--I intended to reply to the list. 

My video card: VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 [Radeon 
HD 4200] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]). I'm using the open-source radeon 
driver, with non-free firmware. (3d acceleration isn't very good, but that's 
another problem...)

I disabled desktop effects, but the problem remains for the bigmem and 
2.6.32-5-686 kernels. Shutdown, restart, etc. work fine with the trunk kernel 
in kde but not the other two kernels. Out of curiosity I installed gdm and 
encountered the same problem. So I think you're right--it's not a kde problem 
but a kernel bug.
